Composing An Essay I should know exactly what you’re going to argue by the time I’ve finished your introduction. This isn’t an Agatha Christie novel, it’s an argument. Also remember, that not all sources you read will be useful, it takes time to find really good sources you can use for your paper. For a social science paper between 6-8 pages you generally should read at least 10 relatively good sources. Originality in an academic essay is all about the way that you interrogate the material in front of you and the way that you put the material together. Well, my first guideline for writing an essay is to make sure that you have a clear line of argument. If the essay title is in the form of a question - this might seem obvious - answer the question. Once you’ve written your academy essay, start the proofreading process. First, look at sentence structures and try to find any grammar and spelling mistakes. You can use a program likeGrammarlyor visit a local writing center if you need help. Then, read your essay aloud to hear how it sounds. Have an academic advisor and/or trusted friend read it and give you pointers as well. For the concluding paragraph and sentence, you should restate your thesis, summarize what the audience just read and include information that signifies the end of the essay. The form of your Conclusion, like your introduction, is flexible. One good way to conclude a paper is to begin the last paragraph with a statement that reflects on what has been stated and proved, without repeating it exactly. The size and detail of this depends on the size of the paper. If you are writing a longer paper, this could be its own section. Mainly it addresses the main arguments and debates in the literature on your topic and how your line of argument is consistent or different from those. When doing academic writing, avoid passive voice, and useactive voiceinstead. An active voice is more engaging and tells the reader exactly who your subject is, what he, she or they are doing. The strongest points suppporting your thesis statement will go in the second paragraph, and the second strongest will go in the third. Doing too much research can definitely give you a better understanding of the broader issue of your topic, and this can be noticed in your writing. However, you can fall into the trap of adding things that are not necessarily relevant to your topic, resulting in a larger paper then the assignment requires. Doing too little research on the other hand, might not give you enough information on the topic and make for a shorter paper. Read the abstract and if that looks promising then read the introduction and the conclusion, skimming through the subheadings and/or the first sentence of each paragraph. This will give you a pretty good idea if the article will be of use to you and save you time from reading the whole thing. Students also tend to fall in the two categories of doing too much research or too little research. This is one way of doing things, and it works for some people. This is to say, if you’ve been taught that your essay should unravel as you go, and I shouldn’t understand your whole argument until the very end, then you’ve been taught wrong. It will help you to pick up contradictions and weaknesses in your arguments before you start writing and it keeps you from going off-track.
